Father denies killing wife

They Say:
“A man who left his three-year-old daughter at Melbourne’s Southern Cross station says he is being framed for murdering his wife in New Zealand. Nai Yin Xue claims another man killed her and stuffed the body into the boot of his car.

Xue, 54, fled Auckland in September soon after his wife disappeared. He abandoned his daughter Qian Xun at Southern Cross before flying to the USA. The girl was dubbed Pumpkin after a logo on her clothes.

The body of Anan Liu, 27, was found in the boot of a car outside the couple’s house in Auckland.
A manhunt for Xue ended five months later near Atlanta, Georgia. He was flown to New Zealand to face a murder charge.

Xue’s lawyer, Chris Comeskey, said yesterday his client “would vigorously defend the murder charge on the grounds he was not Liu’s killer”. He said he planned to hire a private investigator to find the man Xue claims killed his wife.”

Boat driver in fatal crash revealed

They Say:
“Cocktail barman Percy Small has been named as the man at the wheel of the runabout when it crashed into a larger fishing boat, killing six people.Detectives investigating the crash will compare forensic evidence and witness statements after it was initially claimed Matthew Reynolds was at the helm.The two boats collided on Sydney Harbour a week ago about 2.40am (AEST) near Bradleys Head.

Of the 14 people on the overloaded, 23-foot runabout, six died and eight were injured, including Mr Reynolds who remains in hospital in a satisfactory condition.It is believed those on board have also claimed that a third person may have been at the wheel during some point in the journey, News Limited reports.

Witnesses have told police that after Mr Reynolds, a qualified skipper, negotiated the boat from Balmain Wharf he handed the controls over to Mr Small. Mr Small, who holds a boating licence and did not appear affected by alcohol, safely took the boat across the harbour to Watsons Bay. On their way back to Balmain, the boats collided, and it is believed both boats had their lights on at the time, News Limited reports.”

Car Hits Md. Street-Race Crowd; 8 Killed

“A car plowed into a group of street-racing fans obscured by a cloud of tire smoke on a highway Saturday, killing eight people and scattering bodies in the early morning darkness. At least five others were injured in the gruesome wreck along a flat, isolated stretch of highway about 20 miles south of Washington known for illegal races.

Police interviewed the Crown Victoria driver, but no charges were pending, Copeland said. Authorities were looking for the drivers of the two cars involved in the race.

A tractor-trailer that came by shortly afterward may also have struck someone on the roadside as it tried to avoid the crash scene, according to investigators. Timor’s foreign troops blamed

The head of Australia’s forces in East Timor, Brigadier James Baker, says there was nothing his troops could have done to prevent Monday’s assassination attempts on the country’s top two leaders. East Timor’s army chief, Taur Matan Ruak, accused the international security forces in his country yesterday of failing to prevent the attacks, and called for an international investigation to determine the full facts.

Mr Gusmao’s Australian-born wife, Kirsty Sword Gusmao, told last night how their home was surrounded by armed men just minutes before her husband was attacked by armed rebels. She told ABC TV that during the time between when Dr Ramos Horta was shot and her husband’s convoy was ambushed, armed men surrounded their home.

As a state of emergency was declared in Dili, finger-pointing began, with East Timor’s Commander Ruak blaming international forces, which include the Australian-led International Stabilisation Force, for failing to prevent the assassination attempts.

“Given the high number of international forces present in East Timor, in particular within the capital, how is it possible that vehicles transporting armed people have entered the city and executed an approach to the residences of the President … and the Prime Minster without having been detected?” he said.

“There has been a lack of capacity shown by the international forces, who have primary responsibility for the security within East Timor to foresee, react and prevent these events.”

Two men killed in stolen car

They Say:
“Two men from Brisbane’s southside have been killed in a stolen car which collided with a truck on the Pacific Motorway.
Police said the 18-year-old man from Daisy Hill and the 20-year-old man from Loganholme died after the car they were in hit a truck on the Pacific Motorway at 7.10pm (AEST) yesterday.

The car had earlier been stolen from a shopping centre at West Burleigh on the Gold Coast. Two men, one armed with a knife, had threatened the owner before stealing personal property and car keys from the man. Less than ten minutes later, the driver of the vehicle apparently lost control and collided with the truck on the motorway south of Nerang.

The passenger was killed at the scene and the driver died in an ambulance on the way to hospital. The truck driver was treated by ambulance paramedics for shock.”

Woman killed as train crushes car

Kay Stanley stood no chance when she drove her Volkswagen Beetle across railway tracks as the train approached Tyabb station yesterday morning. Accused teen looters flown out of Emerald

“Two teenagers accused of looting flooded homes in central Queensland have been flown out of town for their own safety. The boys, aged 14 and 16, have been charged with multiple property offences in Emerald this week. It is alleged they broke into units on Riverview Street, stealing and vandalising property.

They appeared at a specially convened court hearing last night and were remanded in custody. Police Inspector Lyle Mitchell says the community is angry and the teenagers have been taken out of town as a precaution. “One of my concerns at the moment is making sure that they are safe,” he said.
