Gemma Thoms panicked, swallowed drugs at Big Day Out
They Say:
Ms Thoms, a 17-year-old trainee hairdresser, died after collapsing in 36C heat at the festival, held at Perth’s Claremont Showground on Sunday. Her friends have told police that before entering the venue, she panicked and swallowed three ecstasy tablets she was carrying because she feared the drugs would be detected by police dogs.
NSW Greens MP Sylvia Hale said she had repeatedly warned governments about the likelihood of a death similar to that of Ms Thoms if sniffer dogs continued to be used at such events. She said a 2006 report by the NSW Ombudsman had concluded the dogs were ineffective.
Insp Silver said Ms Thoms was understood to have taken ecstasy before her arrival at the venue, and that her friends had indicated she feared the other tablets she was carrying would be detected.
YACWA has claimed that it is irresponsible to target popular music events, without first working with young people to educate them about their rights and the possible impacts illicit substance use could have their health.

The media have described this as a ‘tragedy’ and is defined as: ‘a disastrous event’. Now I’m no genius, far from it, but I don’t think this falls under disastrous, with the definition including: very unfortunate…… Now that’s interesting… Unfortunate… I really don’t see this being unfortunate, as it was AVOIDABLE!!!!
People are being very shortsighted here, sure a beautiful young girl has died… BUT WHAT THE FUCK WAS A TEENAGER DOING WITH DRUGS!?!?!?!?!? Fuck the fact there were sniffer dogs… Guess what? Take the pills out of this situation and she’s STILL WALKING AROUND TODAY!!!!

Amen to that.
Yes it is a horrible thing that someone at such at young age died, but the unfortunate part to this story is that Gemma Thoms, killed herself.
Never, in any part of Australian society has it been ok to consume, hold, buy or sell illegal drugs.
The only people who stick up for this behavior are the users (junkies) themselves and are stupid enough to keep taking illicit drugs even though they have seen first hand the devastating effects that it has, not only on the user but to also their friends and family.
What annoys me about this whole scenario is that every media report I have seen blames everyone & everything (Big Day Out, Police, Government, Sniffer Dogs etc.) except for the two main culprits; the user & the dealer.
As said above remove drugs from the equation and hey presto, 17 year old, makes it to her 18th!
One positive thing about these drugs is that it proves the theory of Darwinism & natural selection works.
My suggestion is that Paramedics shouldn’t even attempt to revive these druggies, when called to an overdose.

It’s all about choices aint it? You choose to buy the drugs, you choose to carry the drugs and you choose to take the drugs..at some stage you are going to be faced with the consequences of your actions. STIFF SHIT ! If she wasn’t intent on getting off her face then she might still be around..odds are probably not.
Yeah I know..reality is just a bit to confronting for some people.

Everyone has their own opinions on this issue but i think that it should be put to rest. I didnt know Gemma well, I only met her a few times through her boyfriend and she was beautiful, such a lovely girl and it was a terrible tragedy. People make mistakes… but you need to respect her friends and family who are still mourning for her and will for the rest of their lives!!

Oh come on. She took an illegal drug and died. Theres a reason they are illegal, they are dangerous. If she hadent have been breaking the law and taking drugs she would have been here today, the police didnt come along grab the pills, hold her nose till she opened up and chucked them down her throat.
